A new publication by ELIA delves into artistic intelligence as a system of perception, sensing, creating, and decision-making, that has been driving human evolution for centuries – and yet remains overlooked by society in addressing complex challenges.

In the face of unending global upheaval, co-editor Derville Quigley frames the reader as an invitation to remain steadfast and courageous in protecting the openness of art-making practices as we collectively discover new ways of knowing (p.19).

The reader presents a glimpse of the perspectives that were shared at ELIA Biennial 2024, which featured 500+ participants gathered around questions like: What structures are necessary for artistic intelligence to play a meaningful role in responding to planetary problems? How do art and design influence politics, ecology, ethics, technology, and sustainability to build inclusive futures? How do we define artistic intelligence and its possibilities in a contemporary context?

Included here are perspectives ranging from Jan van Boeckel’s investigation of aesthetics and ecological perception; to Angelica Böhm’s Futuring framework for climate storytelling; to Ulrike Scholtes and Ties van de Werff’s collaborative workshops on “leaky bodies” and embodied research methods.

For artists, the reader affirms that what you do – the wandering, the failure, the re-doing, the ‘futility,’ the embodied knowing – is not peripheral to how the world gets better. It is central to it.

For those in leadership and institutional life, Helen Yung and Mark Campbell of the Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence are direct in the provocations they offer in an intimate interview with Quigley: The definition of artistic intelligence won’t solve your thorniest issues, but the practice of it can.
