This lunch-and-learn online event offers an introduction to the concept of artistic intelligence. What is artistic intelligence? Is this a fad or a buzzword? Why is the EU investing millions into artistic intelligence? What are its real underpinnings?
Artistic intelligence is not a metaphor – nor is it limited to digital technology, or entertainment. Join us for an introduction to the concept of artistic intelligence, learn about its applications, and the kinds of problems that artists and artistic methods help address across sectors.
This introductory talk will offer some examples, and present different perspectives on artistic intelligence. How is artistic intelligence relevant for change and innovation? For artists, how do you use this language to contextualize your work?
This is an online event. Join from wherever you are in the world.

Speaker: Helen Yung, Chief Artistic Officer, Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence
Presented by Sheridan College, an Innovation Partner at Art/In Forum, the international forum for artistic intelligence.
Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence brings diverse artists and artistic methods into parts of society where more imagination is needed. We specialize in reimagining how things work in the world using artistic intelligence, a way of working created by artist-researcher Helen Yung.
We emphasize artistic methods: The world’s intangible wisdoms are collected and passed on through artistic and cultural practice. As technocratic values continue to shape and drive contemporary life at exponential rates, we are mindful of what art knows.
(Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence, “Purpose.”)
Helen Yung leads the Laboratory for Artistic Intelligence and is an inter/transdisciplinary artist-researcher. A multiple Dora-award-nominated designer, Helen’s practice ranges from bold experiments in What Art Knows, to creating, designing, and curating installations, interactions, interventions, exhibitions, and performances. What Art Has To Offer Immigration has successfully helped new immigrants and refugees become employed full-time in their fields of interest in Canada. What Art Has To Offer Astronomical Thinking is an ongoing collaboration with theoretical astrophysicist Dr. Gurtina Besla and New York-based artist Samita Sinha. What Art Has To Offer ART (Assisted Reproductive Technologies) began with a collaboration with medical director Dr. Chaula Mehta, and has had select outputs premiere in New York and Zurich.
For over twenty years, Helen has contributed to civic actions and cultural policy thinking at the municipal, provincial, national, and international levels. She is a published researcher, and consults on projects for public and private funders, community organizations, and others. Much of this is institution-adjacent work, which is good or bad depending on how you feel about neighbours.
Previously, Helen was a member of the Culture of Cities Centre, a Salzburg Global Fellow, and a board member for Social Innovation Canada and the Centre for Social Innovation.
